Whales and other things
Lately I've been searching for beach and ocean videos on youtube. The one I am currently listening to shows a full moon emerging from the water. The waves rumple and spray against the beach
The reason I watch and listen to these videos is because lately I've been yearning for the ocean.
I didn't grow up around the ocean. My dad would take us to the beach when we lived in California. I remember dad telling us to never turn our backs to the water. It was beautiful and dangerous. I knew that even the small waves could pull me in and drown me. Still I am fascinated with the vastness of the ocean.
During my Navy training stint in Florida, I would go to Pensacola beach and sit and watch the waves. I have been on the beaches near Orlando. I seen the Panama City beaches and the Cape Town beaches. I walked along a rocky beach near Seattle. Beaches are nice, but it is the ocean the draws and calms me.
One of my favorite experiences with Otto (my late-hubby) was going on the ferry to Vancouver Island. I would sit near the railing and watch the whales breach. I had only seen whales on TV or in documentaries. I was so excited that I laughed for days.
If I could crystalize one moment it would be the two of us with his arm around me as we watched the whales. The gentle lap of the water against the ferry and the spray against my face.
I was hungry then for new experiences.
