Protein bar before I sliced it

So I’ve tried various types of protein bars in the last few years to keep my protein levels up while on dialysis. Because a lot of the protein drains with the dialysis solution it is essential I have a lot of protein to keep my muscles in good health.

However, when I used different protein bars from various manufacturers I would have problems like become too constipated or have diarrhea. Many of these protein bars use soy, which is one of my problem foods.

I finally gave up and started looking for a protein bar recipe that I could use. When I did find one I liked, I tried using different protein sources to see which one was the best tasting and easiest to work with. I used beef isolate, which would have been okay except it had been sweetened with stevia, giving the protein bar an after taste.

Rice protein was the worst. It made the protein bar taste sandy and the recipe was crumbling and hard to work with.

Chocolate Peanut butter protein bar

The winner of the protein ingredient was “goat whey.” I can’t use normal whey from cows because I do have sensitivities to the milk proteins.

Even better, the bar was a decadent taste of chocolate and peanut butter. Taste is king or queen in my case.
