Sometimes I don’t know why I do a scribble. It is free flowing, subconscious, sketching that shows me ideas that are hidden in the unknown areas of my mind. However when I drew “Bear Cub,” it reminded me of my time in Willow Creek, Uintah Basin, Utah.
When I was thirteen my father moved us down to Willow Creek, which was two hours on unpaved roads to the nearest town with a grocery store. He was a ranch foreman for the Ute Tribal Council and his main job was to care for a large herd of cattle. We had no running water and no electricity, but the house was nice.
One day when we were running around the place, we saw a bear cub in the tree near the house. We told one of the range hands that we saw a teddy bear and he came out and herded us into the house. One of the boys who belonged to another family there was trying to poke the bear with a stick.
Anyone who lives in the wild knows that if you see a bear cub that the cub’s mother is close by and is very protective of the cub. To the point of killing anyone or anything that threatens her cub.
When we came back outside, the bear was gone. When I think of this story as an adult, I can see how this could have gone so wrong.
There were about five or six kids there and we wouldn’t have been a match for an angry mother bear.
So in honor of surviving an incident as innocent children, I present the “Bear Cub Collection.”
